ALC’s efforts are fast, yet always in direct response to specific requests from local partners and are coordinated with other organizations and public agencies to ensure the most efficient use of resources.
As human beings, we need to stand by our community at all times but especially during times of distress. At A Little Contribution, we have also extended our support to those affected by natural calamities. Be it the Nepal earthquake or cyclones like Amphan and Yaas, we have been actively engaged in providing relief and medical aid to those hit by these disasters. But we have not been alone in this. People from every stratum of society have come forward to help us in these trying times, and with this all-around support, we have succeeded in moving forward with our aim of helping those who have lost everything to the forces of nature.
In 2015, when Nepal was ravaged by earthquake, we at ALC did our best to help the people who lost everything. We conducted relief aid collection programs in various parts of the city. We sent the same through the Consulate General of Nepal in Kolkata via Air India flights from Kolkata to Nepal. We also collected and sent relief funds to the Prime Minister Natural Disaster Relief Fund to help the victims of the Nepal earthquake.
Cyclone Aamphan caused massive devastation in Bengal in 2020, rendering lakhs of people homeless and deprived of food, water, and necessities. We stood by these people in their hour of need and distributed food packets, medicines, drinking water, and other essential stuff in multiple batches.
Yaas came right in the following year after Amphan. We extended all help possible to the people who got struck by the forces of nature. We were ably supported by our volunteers and people at large in our relentless efforts to conduct Yaas relief work.
In the middle of the devastating Covid 19 tsunami, severe cyclone Yaas made landfall in the Bengal-Odhisa coast on May 26, 2021. Strong winds, flooding rains and a coastal storm surge coinciding with a Kotal high tide had a devastating effect on the lives of people in Sunderbans and other coastal areas. ALC’s emergency response team reached there immediately and helped the local affected populace through distributing essential commodities, undertaking emergency repairing of embankments and earthen dams, arranging temporary shelter homes, and stocking dry foods, staples like rice, and pulses, drinking water, and distributing water purifiers. Awareness at cyclone shelters about Covid guidelines and distribution of masks were also carried on.
